I recently took a PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) test, also known as the Tuberculosis (TB) skin test, as part of a routine health check. This test is commonly done to determine whether a person has been exposed to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis. Since TB can sometimes remain inactive in the body without clear symptoms, early screening is an important preventive step.
The testing process was simple and quick. A small amount of testing solution was injected just under the skin of my forearm, and now I need to return after 48–72 hours so the healthcare provider can check the reaction. The size of any swelling at the injection site helps determine whether the result is negative or if further evaluation is needed.

The PPD test (Purified Protein Derivative test), also known as the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), is commonly used to screen for tuberculosis (TB). In the United States, the price of a PPD test can vary depending on several factors, including the type of healthcare provider, geographic location, and whether you have health insurance.
On average, the cost of a PPD test without insurance typically ranges from $20 to $100. Retail clinics and pharmacies (such as CVS MinuteClinic or Walgreens) often charge between $35 and $60, which usually includes the placement of the test but may not always include the required follow-up visit to read the results. Urgent care centers and private clinics may charge more, sometimes up to $100 or more, especially if additional documentation or same-day services are needed.

If you have health insurance, the PPD test is often covered at little to no cost, particularly when it is required for work, school, immigration, or routine preventive care. Coverage depends on your specific insurance plan, so it’s always a good idea to confirm with your provider beforehand.
